The 6 Types of Tarot Readers

With the more positive acceptance of Wicca and other occult practices, such as tarot and tea readings, many shops and festivals have begun to offer tarot readings for a price. Some of those prices are astronomical and others are very affordable but not every tarot reader is created equal. Some are better than others, some know the premise but aren’t really there for people, only for money, and others are scammers who give vague information that could apply to just about anyone. Here are just a few types of tarot readers you may encounter:

The teacher: The teacher loves giving information, dispensing knowledge, and increasing a client’s ability to help themselves. They are articulate and communicative. The teacher asks questions, is interactive, and jovial but with friendly detachment. They solve problems through logic and imagination. The teacher’s strengths include working with small informal groups and having the ability to empower people through their life’s journey with and without tarot.

The interpreter: Interpreters have no intent to control and they accept the cards at face value. They play with the information that is already there, building upon it in new ways be elaborating. An interpreter improves the original plan because they tend to work on what is there, rather than creating something new. Interpreters don’t make the product; they make the existing product better. The interpreter’s greatest gift is their ability in the role of consultant because they combine intellect with visionary genius. Interpreters excel at elaborating on possible outcomes and are able to see how a situation will evolve over time.

The healer: Healers have an impulse toward service and giving. They want to console, nurture, and fix things. They are intuitive rather than logical and have a strong sense of their own code for living. Readings slant toward the physical body or psychological/ emotional/ spiritual healing. The healer’s greatest strength springs from sensitivity to emotional pain. They are empathetic listeners and reserve judgment because they have ‘been there’.

The mystic: Like healers, mystics engage their personal code of ethics and spiritual beliefs. Mystics understand the relationship between spirituality and creativity. They live a life of simplicity and are independent thinkers driven by burning spiritual search. During readings, mystics create moods and ambiance. They may have an exquisite amethyst crystal on the table with fresh flowers and incense burning nearby. Mystics are ephemeral, constantly processing all experiences (both mundane and magical) through the lens of a spiritual eye. The mystic’s strengths include the ability to give equal attention to intuition and logic.

The alchemist: The alchemist is a careful blending of all types mentioned earlier and represents an ideal. They take friendly detachment and ability to empower from the teacher, logic from the interpreter, the initiative nurturing of the healer, and the mystic’s ability to see the big picture through details. The alchemist is able to respond to the needs of a client by working on all levels.

The scammer: This reader does not care about the wellbeing of the client. All this person is after is the client’s money. This person may or may not tell you that you have been cursed or jinxed, and the only way to release the curse is to pay them a sum of money to do a spell or another, more detailed reading. Be careful because scammers are everywhere.

Which type have you encountered? Let me know in the comments!

Tarot and Cartomancy

How does it work?

I post a lot of tarot spreads through out my blog because I very much enjoy tarot and using it in my practice but not everyone fully understands how tarot works or why it is used. Tarot images are archetypal ideas which mingle with the ordinary constituents of the flow of the unconscious, and therefore is applicable for an intuitive method that has the purpose of understanding the flow of life, possibly even predicting future events, leading to the reading of the conditions of the present moment.

Simply put, tarot allows us to tap into our subconscious understanding of what’s happening and invoke synchronicity in our lives.

How to get started with tarot

Beginning to read tarot can seem very difficult and intimidating. 78 cards total and each one has a different meaning behind them. The different arcana, different spreads, and different decks that each have different picture and sometimes even a different interpretation.

Many beginners feel they must study and memorize everything about tarot before they begin to practice it but that is just not true. This might work if you have an amazing memory but most people do not.

Follow your intuition: This is very important as it will help you in really getting to know your deck. Examine details on the card and see what you notice. Often these details hint to the card’s overall meaning. Certain cards appear negative but are, in fact, either positive or meaningful depending on like cards drawn with it. Death and The Devil are the most misunderstood and feared cards. You need to look at the deeper meaning behind the card, its art, and the conceptual meaning. What symbols or items do you see? Does that help to answer your question?

Oftentimes, intuition is how a professional tarot reader reads for a client. Most professionals know the traditional meanings, and from there can infer the overall meaning of the spread.

From there, read the accompanying book to either check that you were correct or to give additional details because it is difficult to memorize every card, every meaning, and every combination. Were you close to what the book says? Don’t be upset if you weren’t because it takes time to become proficient. You didn’t learn to read overnight so don’t expect to be able to read tarot overnight.

Were you close to what the book says? Don’t be upset if you weren’t because it takes time to become proficient. You didn’t learn to read overnight so don’t expect to be able to read tarot overnight.

A previously mentioned tarot tip was to do a daily tarot card draw and record your findings. When doing that drawing, ask simple questions such as “what do I need to look out for today?” or “What do I need to work on today?”. Intuitively read your card first before you check the book for accuracy. Write down or just reflect on the differences between your intuitive reading and the traditional meaning.

Putting the cards in action like this and applying it to your everyday life will not only help you learn and remember the traditional card meanings, but also get you more comfortable reading intuitively and finding your own meanings and answers too.

One of the most common misconceptions is that tarot is a tool used to TELL you your future, but it is actually a tool for GUIDING you. Don’t ask yes or no questions. Instead of “Will I be rich?”, try asking something like “What can I do to become financially stable?” and let tarot be your guide. But also, do not become too hung up on the answer because your future is constantly changing.

Effective Tarot Questions:

What do I need to know about my love life?
What do I need to know about my career?
What do I need to know about the situation with my sister/ brother/ mother/ husband/ friend/ etc?
How can I move my love life forward?
How can I move my career forward?
What’s trying to come into my life?
What’s the strongest foundation to build upon?
I can go 2 ways. Help me decide which way to go.
What are the pros and cons of these 2 choices?
How can I make the best possible decision?
What should I do about the situation with my work?
What shouldn’t I do about it?
What should I do about the situation with my sister/ brother/ mother/ father/ spouse/ etc.?
What shouldn’t I do about it?
How can I further my future?
Where is love in my life?
What am I ignoring?
What am I not seeing?
What’s holding me back?
What am I denying?
What am I seeing that is not true?
What have I forgotten?
What could trip me up?
What can I learn from the past?
What is the future telling me?
What cycles are impacting me?
What have I learned?
Where am I strongest?
What should I look out for?
What should I improve?
What, if anything, needs to be done?
How can I communicate this in the best way possible?
How can I improve my relationship with…..?
How can I improve my ability to…?
How can I make the transition from…. To….?
Can you help me understand why…?
Can you give me insight into….?
What do I need to know to decide on….?
What do I need to understand/ know about….?
What do I need to know to get along better with….?

Once you have become comfortable with the cards from your daily draw, try a simple 3 card pull. The 3 cards can represent many different things but try to keep it simple.

Example:

  • Past, present, future
  • Situation, action, result
  • What I think, what I feel, what I do
  • You, another person, your relationship

For more examples, check out the 3 Card Spread. It has an even longer list of potential uses of the 3 card draw. Now, let’s take the first example. The card you draw to represent your past could represent how you felt in the past, how you feel looking back now, or a situation you were in before. The second card, the present, might represent how you currently feel about where you are in life, a current situation, or it could even reflect your fears or your desires that are effecting your current situation. The third card, the future, could represent the path you need to get to where you want to be, or it could be a result of the steps you are taking in the present (which could be good OR bad).

Remember the cards aren’t dealing you a definitive prophecy of what’s to come. How you interpret the cards will depend on the question you asked, the relationship that they have to each other and your own intuition when reading them!

There are a lot of different tarot and oracle cards on the market. Some of these decks are just gorgeous, and have all sorts of themes and art styles. Each deck will carry its own energy, symbolism, and meanings through the art. If you are drawn to a gorgeous, non-traditional deck and want to learn on that, go for it!

If you’re interested in learning the “traditional” meanings of the tarot cards, choosing a more traditional deck or one that is similar in imagery which could make it easier to follow each suite’s story and pull the traditional symbolism intuitively from the artwork so you learn it more quickly.

When trying to understand the meaning of Tarot, it is very helpful if we can keep in mind that we are dealing with symbols, and when we realize that, we immediately find ourselves in the regions of our subconscious mind.

Exploring Past Lives

Some people have memories of other lives and others experience recurring dreams that give information they had never had access to. The crazy thing is, I fall into the latter category. I have had so many recurring dreams/ excessive dreams about being killed by a crocodile. There is no explanation for it. I grew up in Germany and North Carolina my entire life and I have never had a fear of the creature. I still have no fear of them. They are fascinating little dinosaurs. My husband is from Louisiana and alligators abound. Still, I am not scared or nervous. I treat them with a healthy dose of respect and distance because I am not a fool, but I don’t mind them at all. However, that has not stopped me from having these dreams (that I can remember) 2 to 3 times a year for almost 27 years. Even to this day, I have those dreams. My most recent one was a few months ago. Some are different, some are recurrent, but they all end the same way. I am terrified, in danger, and often times I die. And I also always know that for sure it is a crocodile, not an alligator or any other creature related to that animal type. Based on those dreams, I genuinely believe that I likely died in a past life by one of these creatures. Do I believe I was an Egyptian Priestess or something super fancy like that? No. Absolutely not. I am too much of a hot mess to think I could have possibly been so dignified in a past life. But what I do believe is that I had a tragic and violent death by one of these creatures in a very green Mesopotamian/ Middle Eastern location that was near water.

Have any of you ever experienced anything like this or feel the same way about having a past life? I would love to hear your own stories! Leave a comment below!

Caring for, Cleansing, and charging your Tarot and Oracle Deck Part 2

Crystals are a great addition to tarot. Use crystals before a reading to help meditate and clear your energy and lift your vibration before doing a reading. You can place crystals on top of your deck while you aren’t using them as well. This will help clear your deck of any negative or confused energies. You can also place some crystals on your reading table. Depending on what crystals you use, this can help bring in positive, healing, and supportive energy. And finally, you can use them to help manifest your intentions. Choose a tarot card that represents what you are wanting to create in your lie. Now choose a crystal to charge with your intention. Hold both in your hands as you visualize the outcome and then carry the crystal with you to bring about your manifestation.

Now for when to cleanse your deck. You should cleanse your deck when:

  • When other people have touched your cards
  • when you buy a new or second hand tarot deck
  • when you have done a particularly draining tarot reading
  • when your cards have been sitting dormant and unused for an extended period of time
  • When you or your cards have been exposed to a lot of negative energy such as a negative client or a challenging personal situation
  • When your tarot readings are beginning to feel unclear, disconnected, or stuck
  • When your cards have fallen on the floor or had some other sort of accident
  • When you simply want to reconnect with your cards

Fresh air: just after a rain shower or even in the warmth of the sun, place your cards outside to take in the fresh air and draw in the cleansing rays. Keep in mind windy positions or water damage.

Elemental clearing: Elemental clearing brings your awareness to using different techniques that are aligned with each of the four elements used in tarot. For example, for earth clearing, use a salt burial; for water clearing, use a moon bath or sprinkle water on your cards; for fire clearing, pass your cards over a candle; for air clearing, use a smudge stick.

Salt burial: salt can be used to draw out negative energy from your cards. Wrap your tarot deck in a plastic bag as tightly as you can. Place your wrapped tarot deck in a container that is larger than you r tarot deck, place your wrapped cards in and completely surround them with salt on all sides, above, and below. Keep your cards buried in the salt for a few days and up to a week before taking them out and disposing of the salt.

Earth burial: For an especially strong and unpleasant energy, you may decide to bury the deck in the earth for seven days or for the period from the full moon to the first sliver of the new moon. Visualize mother earth absorbing all negative energies.

incense: you can either pass the entire deck through incense or you can organize your deck of cards into their respective suits (major arcana, wands, pentacles, swords, and cups). Pass the cards through the smoke of the incense of your choice. Copal resin, white sage, and frankincense are a great one for this task. Shuffle them together and they are ready.

Smudge: Burn dried sage or rosemary and pass the cards through the smoke several times. You can also cleanse any crystals that you plan to use during this process.

Recharging your deck

Crystals: Crystals can also be used for recharging your deck. In this method, you place a crystal that calls out to you on top of the tarot deck. You can use amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, or any crystal that works for you. Quartz is a wonderful absorber of energies and it is no bad thing to keep one with your tarot whenever you store it away.

Moon energy bath: Place the deck on your window sill where it can catch the moonlight. The energies of the moon can recharge the cards. The full moon and new moon are great times for this. Moon energy is feminine, intuitive, and creative.

Sun energy bath: In this method, the cards are placed in direct sunlight. Usually a couple of hours of being bathed in warm sunlight does the trick for charging the cards. In comparison to the moon, the sun represents masculine, logical, and clarity filled energy. With the sun, there are no phases to consider. You can also charge your cards in a couple of hours as opposed to all night.

Breath of life: In this method, you hold your cards and envision a bright white light cocooning over your cards. Envision any impurities and negative energies leaving and only power and light passing through the deck. Breathe into you deck by placing your deck to your mouth and asking the deck for guidance, love, light, and truth. Finally, hold the deck to your heart for 5 heartbeats.

Emergency deck cleanse: This is one you can use when you are pressed for time between readings or someone has just handled your deck without permission just before you need to read with it. Simply knock 3 times on the back of the deck with your dominant hand to shake loose the unwanted energy and then blow on it to infuse it with your own energy.

Caring for, Cleansing, and charging your Tarot and Oracle Deck Part 1

Make sure that you are storing your decks properly, both oracle and tarot. This will eliminate the need to cleanse as often. Caring for your tarot cards is important to ensure you are receiving accurate readings. Some people put their cards in special boxes or pouches but there are no set rules. Here are some ways to store and care for your cards to ensure many years of use.

Tarot deck’s original packaging: If you have any number of tarot decks, chances are you will have one or two working decks, leaving the others pretty much untouched. It’s a delightful habit to collect tarot decks and so many are left in their original boxes. As unglamorous as this is, your cards will be remain perfectly safe and cared for in this way.

Spread cloth: using a cloth on which you do your readings is a great way to reduce wear and tear on your deck. The surfaces of tables, mats, and even shelves can be rough on the cards, especially when you use those surfaces to give your cards a good shuffle. Fabric place mats, large scarves, and table cloths are great as spread cloths.

Tarot bags: there are a number of tarot bags available on the market today. Drawstring pouches can have amazing designs that match your deck and add to the feel. They are made out of a variety of materials ranging from your basic cotton cloth to velvet and are available in many different sizes.

Tarot card boxes: Just like bags, there are a number of boxes out there in which you can store your tarot cards. These can be made out of a variety of materials like wood or metal. They may be simple or highly detailed depending on the user. Traditionally, if a box was used it was made out of pine.

You can also wrap your cards in silk or cotton. Some traditions you may hear of are to sleep with your cards under your pillow. Some believe that this will increase your connection to the cards. Other traditions state to never let anyone else touch your cards. Others will not handle your cards as carefully as you might and so this will decrease the wear and tear but other traditions have the recipient pulling the cards to be read. Some only allow the client to shuffle while others only allow the reader to shuffle. It is up to the card owner to decide how they want their cards to be handled. I personally don’t let people touch my main deck unless the card needing to be drawn should be drawn by that person because of the type of question they asked. I do recleanse my deck afterwards. Otherwise, I draw the cards myself and point out what needs pointing out.

How do you take care of your own decks?

Animal Friends Tarot Spread

Sometimes we meet animals along the way in life and they aren’t pets but they aren’t familiars either. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have anything to say to you or teach you. We can learn a lot from the creatures of the world and even more when they choose to interact with us. Try this spread next time you have an interaction with an animal you are not used to being around, be them squirrel, bird, beaver, or even a stray in the neighborhood!
