Tarot: The Devil

Main Association: Materialism

Quick Reference: Materialism, persistence, hidden desires, deception, bondage, addiction, sexuality, greed, envy, obsession, breaking out, ignorance, hopelessness

Element/Sign: Earth
Planet: Saturn
Zodiac: Capricorn
Chakra: Root
Day: Sunday
Archangel: Cassiel, Metatron, Samael, Anael
Qabalistic Correspondences: Knees, bones
Color: Grey, dark brown, black, indigo

Metal: Lead
Body: Skeleton, skin, teeth, knees, genitals, substance abuse, chain smoking, negative self image, hemorrhoids
Exercise: Bodybuilding which increases bone density
Stance: Chair Pose (Utkatasana)
Affirmation: Just for today, I choose to turn a deaf ear to my sense of entitlement.

The Devil card depicts the devil as Baphomet, or the Horned Goat of Mendes, or the ancient goat-god Dionysius, shown sitting in his throne while watching over a male and female captive. Baphomet originally represented the balance between good and evil, male and female, and human and animal; however, more recently, this figure has been linked to the occult and has become a scapegoat for all things considered ‘evil’.

The Devil is a passionate, hedonistic, and lust filled card indicating great sex but where there is something amiss. The relationship may be bordering on the side of obsession or it has become angst ridden. You might also be involved with someone who is not fully available to you, yet you keep going back for more. It represents being seduced by the material world and physical pleasures. Also living in fear, domination and bondage, being caged by an overabundance of luxury, discretion should be used in personal and business matters.

The Devil card represents your shadow (or darker) side and the negative forces that constrain you and hold you back from being the best version of yourself. You may be at the effect of negative habits, dependencies, behaviors, thought patterns, relationships, and addictions. You have found yourself trapped between the short-term pleasure you receive and the longer-term pain you experience. Just as the Lovers card speaks to duality and choice, so too does the Devil; however, with the Devil, you are choosing the path of instant gratification, even if it is at the expense of your long-term well-being.

The reversed Devil may also be a sign you are hiding your deepest, darkest self from others, keeping it a secret. You may have thoughts, fantasies, addictions, or habits that you don’t want others to know because you feel embarrassed or ashamed. But sometimes, holding onto the secrets can contribute to a growing level of guilt, and you may feel a sense of relief if you can share your darker self with at least one trusted individual. There is also a need to accept who you are and forgive yourself for the thoughts you have. Of course, if you are at risk of harming yourself or others, please seek professional help immediately.

Positives/ Upright:

  • Addiction
  • Enslavement
  • Hedonism
  • Materialism
  • Shadow self
  • Attachment
  • Restriction
  • Sexuality

Negatives/ Reversed:

  • Playfulness

Element/Sign: Fire + water
Exercise: Horse riding, free running
Stance: The Wheel Pose followed by Child’s Pose
Affirmation: I courageously expand in the direction of my divine desire

In this card, we see a revolving wheel which represents the wheel of life. In each corner of the card we see four winged creatures sitting upon clouds. These creatures represent the four elements of minor arcana. A common aspect to most interpretations of this card within a reading is to introduce an element of change in the querent’s life, such change being in station, position or fortune: such as the rich becoming poor, or the poor becoming rich.

The Wheel of Fortune symbolizes the unpredictable nature of the universe. A big picture card, it shows us that nothing is fixed. Our situations are constantly changing and what starts out as good or bad will soon change into something else. In this sense this is a card of transformation that can be read many different ways. It all depends on how we approach our place on the wheel. Fighting the changes that come with The Wheel of Fortune is a fool’s errand. It’ll simply spin again, bringing us somewhere new. This is a card that encourages flexibility, creative thinking, and taking opportunities when they arise. It’s best to make hay while the sun shines because The Wheel will spin again and who knows where to. Preparation is well and good, but when you don’t know what’s next it can turn into a waste of energy.

Positives/ Upright:

  • Chance
  • Change
  • Destiny
  • Luck
  • Opportunity
  • Winning
  • Dynamism

Negatives/ Reversed:

  • Bad luck
  • Disappointment
  • Misfortune
  • Mishap
  • Unforeseen setbacks
  • Unpredictable

Witch Tip: For a situation that is not going your way, find the Wheel of Fortune in your deck. The two cards on either side are the solution to your problem.

The Hermit indicates a time of introspection, as this card guides us to look deep within our mind and spirit. The Hermit can mean you need time alone to make decisions or that others view you as some kind of inspirational guide.

The Hermit card has a dual aspect. It represents both the inner and outer worlds. The Hermit is the seeker of wisdom, temporarily disassociating himself from everyday life in order to look within and discover the answers to deep questions. Once he has found his inner light, he returns to the world to help others in their own search for greater understanding.

In a reading, the Hermit card implies a time of withdrawal, where the realms of the mind and spirit become more important than the pull of the senses. This may involve a literal withdrawal from worldly activities such as going away to a meditation retreat or starting a study course. The insights gained are then integrated and practiced in daily life and are communicated to others. The Hermit holds a lamp that shines out to represent the guiding light of inner wisdom. Some decks show the Hermit holding a staff. This represents inner power and provides the strength to direct his life’s journey.

The Empress is symbolic of the Earth Mother or nurturer, the archtype feminine principle in its role of abundant, sensual fertility. She signifies benevolence, creation, and ripeness. In the sequence of the journey of the soul through the Major Arcana, the Empress is the worldly child of the Magician and the High Priestess. Her earthiness and drive to procreate are qualities that lead her to become the mother who rules the Earth and all growing, living things.

Tarot: Temperance

Main Association: Balance/ patience

Quick Reference: Temperance, balance, health, combination, verify, purpose, questing, discovering moderation, trials, challenges, learning, patience, harmony, self-control, healing

Element/Sign: Fire
Planet: Jupiter
Zodiac: Sagittarius, Cancer
Chakra: Heart
Day:
Archangel: Raphael, Chamuel, Ariel, Anael
Qabalistic Correspondences: Hips, thighs
Color: Red, crimson, purple, gold, indigo, violet
Crystal: Golden topaz, sapphire, amethyst, diamond
Metal: tin
Body: Pituitary gland, liver, hips, pelvis, sciatic nerve, gall bladder, hamstrings
Exercise: Archery, splits
Stance: Anjaneyasana (low lunge)
Affirmation: I trust my passion to guide my vision and wherever it takes me, I go with complete faith

Temperance is a reminder to center yourself and stay focused while a situation is being resolved. This card represents unity of opposites, and depicts a winged angel pouring water from one cup into another. Water here should be understood as a universal solvent.

This tarot card connects Tiferet and Yesod – two Sephiroth on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The relationship between Tarot and Kabbalah is presented here. Tiferet means beauty, while Yesod is our foundation. Hence, this Major Arcana tells us that in order to reach beauty (inner beauty) from our formerly established foundation we have to have temperance.

Some of the meanings of the Temperance Tarot Card can be summarized as ignoring the imperatives of life, acting while having an accurate calculation, liberation from conscious and unconscious desires, making a balance, closing the gap between the outer and inner world, success is possible only through control,

The Temperance Tarot Card demands sacrificing the ego in order to restore our natural connection to the life forces. In a different light, this card can mean searching for the lost aspects of ourselves, even if having to descend to the underground world (our subconscious).

The key message is to weigh every single object or situation well, no matter whether we will use it as a weapon or as a tool. Use it with care, use it without disturbing others.

In some interpretations the Angel is an Angel of Time. One of the cups, thus represents the past, and the other stands for the future. The water streaming in between them both is consequently the present time. The water goes both ways. Similarly, from the present we can go two ways – to the future or to the past.

Positives/ Upright:

  • Combining skills
  • New harmonious relationships
  • Patience
  • Moderation
  • Reaching new levels of consciousness

Negatives/ Reversed:

  • Lack of moderation
  • Lack of balance
  • Unmanaged impulses

Tarot: The Chariot

Main Association: Victory

Quick Reference: Victory, will, self-assertion, hard control, receptivity, control, willpower, tradition, achievement through effort, self-master, action, force, assertion, conventional expectations, conformity, autonomy,

Element/Sign: Water
Planet: Moon
Zodiac: Cancer, Sagittarius
Chakra: Solar Plexus
Day:
Archangel: Camael, Michael
Qabalistic Correspondences: Stomach
Color: Yellow, red, white
Crystal: Citrine, moonstone, ruby, pearl
Metal:
Body: Chest, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, elbows, digestion, womb
Exercise: Anything which moves you forward with speed where it is necessary to stay focused in order to maintain your balance. Swimming
Stance: Yoga Warrior II pose
Affirmation: I move forward with clarity and poise, staying connected and protected.

Important keywords for the Chariot card are motion, balance, skill, control, and determination. This card is also known as Lord of the Triumph of Light. It symbolizes the water element, which means dealing with emotions.

One of the metaphysical meanings of Chariot card is “domination of spirit over form”. It represents the very notion of “concentration attained by dedication”. To this card we assign the Moon as a celestial body. The horoscope sign Cancer. The Chariot indicates being able to make use of your emotions to control what you want deep down in your heart. You can also use your emotions as a means for achieving your life goals.

On the Tree of Life, each Major Arcana card is linked to a certain path that connects two nearby Sephirot. This card connect Binah and Geburah, and corresponds to path number 18. It is worth noticing that the Angelic hierarchy of the Binah sephirot are the Thrones. In that sense, the Chariot can be considered a mobile Throne of God. If you look closely, you will notice that the Charioteer carries the Urim and Thummim, associated with the Hebrew High Priest’s breastplate. They must run in the same direction to achieve victory, so you have to have control. The bottom line is: if you don’t have control over your needs, wants, and emotions, you can’t commit to your goals.

At the same time, motivation and confidence are required as well, that is, if you want to get things moving in the right direction. This Tarot card can also represent new ideas and inspiration to get you to action, for example, in case you encounter arduous and challenging situations.

Fear is something very negative. Fear is one of the most destructive emotions that needs to be mastered. It can only weaken you, unless you are able to face it and turn it into something constructive. If you reach the stage of control over your emotional world, you can do almost anything!

Once you overcome your fear, you can bypass the restrictions of your own lower self, and that’s when success comes knocking on your door. The spiritual message of this card cold be formulated like this: “Don’t be distracted by anything that tries to pull you away from your goals.

In its reversed position, the Chariot tarot card implies lack of emotions, defeat, loss. It can also mean losing control over your desire, passions, or emotions in general. It can mean losing direction or purpose in life. The reverse Chariot could also indicate that the Querent knows what their goals are, but have lost determination and faith in them.

Positives/ Upright:

  • Victory over adversity
  • Crushing obstacles
  • Ambition towards goals
  • Deserved victory
  • Self control
  • Effort
  • Perseverance
  • Willpower
  • Movement
  • Success

Negatives/ Reversed:

  • Lack of control
  • Aggression
  • Lack of direction
  • Opposition
  • Egotistical
  • Arrogance
  • Wrong direction
  • Inertia

Element/Sign: Air

Qabalistic Correspondences: Cerebral nervous system
Color: Azure blue, yellow

Affirmation: As above, so below… it is my will that ___ and I decree so mote it be

The Magician stands with one arm stretched upwards towards the Universe, and the other pointing down to the earth. His positioning represents his connection between the spiritual realms and the material realms. The Magician uses this relationship to create and manifest his goals in the physical realm. He is the conduit that converts energy into matter. The Magician’s robe is white, symbolising purity, and his cloak is red, representing worldly experience and knowledge.

On the table in front of him are the four symbols of the Tarot suits – a cup, pentacle, sword and wand – each symbolizing one of the four elements – water, earth, air and fire. It is also a sign that he has all the tools (and elements) he needs to manifest his intentions into being. Above his head is the infinity symbol, and around his waist is a snake biting its own tail – both of which signal that he has access to unlimited potential. And in the foreground is an array of foliage and flowers, symbolizing the blossoming and fruition of his ideas and aspirations.

everything you need right now is at your fingertips. You have the spiritual (fire), physical (earth), mental (air) and emotional (water) resources to manifest your desires. And when you combine them with the energy of the spiritual and earthly realms, you will become a manifestation powerhouse.

The Magician is a card of Mercury, planet that brings communication, promotes the intellectual processes, helps knowledge acquisition, and deals with information in general. When the Magician appears in a spread, it points to the talents, capabilities and resources at the querent’s disposal to succeed. Life moves in cycles of conception, birth, growth, death, decay, and rebirth. The major arcana cards remind us of this. The Fool is the beginning of the major arcana, the first step that propels us forward into new experiences. The Fool is the point where all the potential in the cycle lies. The World is not the end, but the start of a new cycle. The World is the culmination of the cycle and does not signify the end, because it sets the Fool onto another new cycle.

The World card evokes the cycles of completion and renewal you experience in all stages of your life. The World is the final card in the sequence of the Major Arcana. It doesn’t represent the end of growth and experience, but rather the beginning of a new cycle. The World card incorporates the wisdom gathered throughout the journey of the previous 21 cards and takes this into the next phase of Tarot.

When drawn in a tarot reading, this card signifies that you are complete. Lessons have been learned and there is a sense of freedom, of liberation from past encumbrances. Life is viewd as good, everything is seen to have its place in the learning process; all seems perfect, bright, and luminously fresh. Tarot: Strength

Another positive card to start out 2021!

Main Association: Strength

Quick Reference: Strength, patience, compassion, soft control, courage, self confidence, kindness, self love, respect, optimism, generosity, determination, control, fortitude

Element/Sign:  Fire
Planet: Sun
Zodiac: Leo
Chakra: Heart

Qabalistic Correspondences: Heart
Color: Gold

Exercise: Any type of exercise which requires good posture or is performed aerobically outdoors in the sunshine
Stance: Yoga fish pose
Affirmation: I gently transmute all resistance with kindness and compassion

Strength is a card to tame the wild heart of the beast. Strength reconciles your base instincts with your higher levels of consciousness. It is an exercising of one’s talents. The Strength card symbolizes the taming of wild instincts and of a person’s base desires in order to subject these uncontrollable urges to the conscious will. This is accomplished through clarity and purity of thought and by purposeful action. The strength card tells you that your baser, more selfish instincts only hold power over you if you allow them to.

This message is in keeping with the evolutionary process of the self depicted in the major arcana: the development of self-knowledge that raises the consciousness to a higher understanding and fuller integration of all aspects of yourself.

The strength card represents a passion for life that provides the energy to overcome even the most difficult challenges. It indicates a sensual appreciation and an expression of the life force, and a boundless confidence that arises from the knowledge that you are strong and grounded in your convictions.

The Strength card features a battle between a man (the conscious mind) and a lion (the wild instincts). The lion on the card struggles against the man but has evidently already accepted defeat. This shows that the conscious mind has supremacy over the animal nature.

  • Strength

Death is one of the best known and easily recognized cards in tarot but few people are aware of its true meaning. Some decks, such as the Tarot of Marseilles and Visconti Sforza Tarot omit the name from the card, calling it “The Card with No Name”, often with the implication of a broader meaning than literal death. There are other decks that title Death as “Rebirth” or “Death-Rebirth.”

Contrary to what most tarot beginners believe drawing the Death card does not mean you are about to die. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Symbolizing release and rebirth, the Death card is about transformation and reminds us that you must be willing to let go of the past in order to embrace new opportunities. It is about new life emerging from old or a warning that you need to let go of something. It can be seen as the snake that sheds its skin as it grows or the caterpillar emerging from its cocoon as a butterfly.

Be ready to accept change. The Death card often shows that our old way of life is no longer useful to us and warns that aspects of it need to be discarded to make space for the new to come in. This means the ending of a phase of life, job, or relationship in order to create the space for new growth. This process can be painful if you try to cling on to the past but allowing yourself to put it behind you brings in a new phase.

Death and The Tower inform us that major changes are imminent which will have powerful repercussions. Although change is necessary to our growth and development, we often resist it due to fear of the unknown. The Death card shows a sudden transformation that occurs through letting go of someone or something that is important to us, but which we have outgrown. Death is not to be taken literally!

Remember that death doesn’t necessarily mean death! But if you like Adam Ellis’ work, check out his Facebook!

The skeleton on the Death card actually represents what will remain AFTER death. And his armor and/or scythe reminds us to focus on what is invincible and cannot be destroyed. The skeleton shows a need to pare down to the ‘bones’ of an issue and to recognize what is fundamental in our lives as we make space for new beginnings. The river running through the center of the card shows a new beginning for emotions and a need to move on and go willingly with the flow of change.

Often, there is a white rose on the card which is the symbol of purification and the beginning of new life. Sometimes there are 2 pillars and the sun rises between them symbolizing drawing of a new phase of life. Crowns show often that desire for prestiege or possessions can trap us while the scythe represents the clean cut we need to make from the past.

it is uncommon that this card actually represents a physical death, rather it typically implies an end, possibly of a relationship or interest, and therefore an increased sense of self-awareness. It is the end of one phase of our lives, not literal death. This symbolism challenges us to look beyond death as we know it and focus on our capacity to rise above our pain and re-invent ourselves.

A reversed Death warns you that holding on to the past brings only pain and can prevent you from moving on to new experiences. Fear of letting go can hinder growth and create conflict.

Positives/ Upright:

  • Crossing a threshold
  • Beginning a new cycle
  • Fresh start
  • Transformation
  • Rebirth
  • End
  • mortality
  • destruction
  • corruption

Negatives/ Reversed:

  • Loss
  • Grief
  • Ending cycle
  • Inertia
  • sleep
  • lethargy
  • petrifaction
  • somnambulism
  • hope destroyed

Although change is necessary to our growth and development, we often resist it due to fear of the unknown. The tower suggests a change in circumstances lies ahead.
