Kundalini and Chakras

The reason I include Kundalini and chakras as a witch is because there is a lot of spiritual awareness involved with both of these topics. Many witches practice forms of Kundalini, yoga, and spiritualism. While I do not personally include it in my practice, I have found that there is a huge correlation between my mental state, happiness, and health at different times in correlation with chakra quizzes which I take every so often just to help me focus on where/ what I am lacking. That being said, I believe that no matter what you call it, there is definitely a connection between your mind and body and the things the chakras spiritually represent.

Kundalini deals with the spiritual energy flow system. You may have heard people talking about “Kundalini,” but perhaps you haven’t taken the time to really understand the concept. Kundalini is one of the most fundamental facets of your being. It’s something that all people possess, but most often it lies dormant. Hindu holy texts liken the Kundalini to a sleeping serpent. When you awaken this serpent, you enable yourself to reach a new plateau of personal fulfillment.

Kundalini, meaning “coiled snake”, is a form of divine energy or shakti which is believed to be located at the base of the spine at the root Chakra, or muladhara, in Hinduism. Shakti is the primordial cosmic energy and represents the dynamic forces that are thought to move through the entire universe; it is an important concept in Śaiva Tantra, tantra being what denotes the esoteric traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, where it is believed to be a force or power associated with the divine feminine. This energy, when cultivated and awakened through tantric practice, is believed to lead to spiritual liberation. The term, along with practices associated with it, was adopted into Hatha yoga in the 11th century.

The Kundalini experience is frequently reported to be a distinct feeling of electric current running along the spine. Eknath Easwaran, an Indian-born spiritual teacher, author, as well as a translator and interpreter of Indian religious texts, has paraphrased the term as “the coiled power”, a force which ordinarily rests at the base of the spine, described as being “coiled there like a serpent”. Kundalini is considered to occur in the chakra and nadis (energy channels) of the subtle body. Each chakra is said to contain special characteristics and with proper training, moving Kundalini through these chakras can help express or open these characteristics.

Kundalini is described as a sleeping, dormant, potential force in the human organism. It is one of the components of an esoteric description of the body, which consists of nadis (energy channels), chakras (psychic centers), prana (subtle energy), and bindu (drops of essence).

There are two nerve currents in the spinal column, called Pingalâ and Idâ, and a hollow canal called Sushumnâ running through the spinal cord. At the lower end of the hollow canal is the “Lotus of the Kundalini”. They describe it as triangular in a form in which, in the symbolical language, there is a power called the Kundalini coiled up. When that Kundalini awakens, it tries to force a passage through this hollow canal, and as it rises step by step, layer after layer of the mind becomes open and different visions and powers come forth and are now open to you. When it reaches the brain, you are perfectly detached from the body and mind; the soul finds itself finally free.

In order to understand Kundalini and how it can affect your body, you need to first understand the chakras. The position of the spiritual energy (Kundalini) chakras is important to be aware of. The word “chakra” is often mentioned in metaphysical circles and implicated in healing practices.  What exactly does this mean?  The word chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disc”. The chakras in the body are wheels of energy, which vary in activity levels, depending on what we are experiencing in our lives. Their size, color, and brilliance vary according to an individual’s state of health and development. They appear as vortices on the energy body or etheric double, the field of life force which animates or vitalizes the dense physical body. Beyond that glows the aura; by reading the aura, one may learn much about people.

The chakras are centers of powerful, vibrational energy. The chakra centers control your ability to succeed, your happiness, your relationships, your sense of confidence and more. Through the chakras you can experience enlightenment. Your Kundalini is connected to the chakras; it ascends up your torso and passes through each chakra center. Just as you need to stop and refuel your car on long journeys, your Kundalini energy is ‘refilled’ at each chakra site.

Energetic blockages at chakra sites are the most common source of difficulty for those looking to raise their Kundalini vibration. When one or more of your chakra centers are weak or closed, the energy of Kundalini is prevented from moving further. These energetic disturbances can result in all kinds of illnesses, both physical and mental, which can prevent a person from moving forward in life towards their goal of happiness. With this, your ability to take pleasure in life can become greatly diminished.

Chakras are concentrated points of energy in the human body which keep us healthy and in balance with the world around us. Chakras are centers of energy, located on the midline of the body and correspond with every aspect of our being. A chakra is a center through which the spiritual energy flows, a spiritual gate so to speak. There are 72,000 channels of spiritual energy flow system in the body. There are seven major chakras, or energy centers of the body, and they govern our psychological properties.

The chakras located on the lower portion of our body are our instinctual side, the highest ones our mental side. Working with your chakras opens the seven gates to energy freedom in your body and connect you to the universal energy that is all around you. When they are balanced, they absorb this energy and send it throughout your physical and spiritual bodies to keep them healthy. When they are unbalanced, you may develop problems in your health, relationships, and life.

Our chakras tell a story about our relationship with ourselves, others, and the world around us. When we feel vibrant, happy and supported, our chakras are open and balanced. When we feel depleted, sad, or disconnected, our chakras are more blocked or unbalanced.

Ideally, all chakras would contribute to our being. Our instincts would work together with our feelings and thinking. However, this is usually not the case. Some chakras are not open enough (being under-active), and to compensate, other chakras are over-active. The ideal state is where the chakras are balanced.

There exist lots of techniques to balance the chakras. Mostly techniques to open chakras are used. It makes no sense to try to make over-active chakras less active, as they are compensating for other chakras. To restore the compensation they’d be over-active again in no time. To stop them from compensating, the chakras they are compensating for must be opened.

Chakra balance is achieved one chakra at a time, by working on one issue at a time. Each state of negativity or ill health corresponds to a particular energy center and can be remedied by shifting the focus and activity of that energy center. For example, when healing 1st chakra issues, the remedy for fear is action. In the 6th chakra, the remedy for depression is creativity. Consider your emotions. What are you really feeling and why? This can help you begin to heal both your mind and body together.

The 7 main chakras are:
7. Crown Chakra
6. Third Eye Chakra
5. Throat Chakra
4. Heart Chakra
3. Solar Plexus Chakra
2. Sacral Chakra
1. Root Chakra

To discover the state of your chakras, you can try one of many quizzes or concentrate heavily on what you know is lacking and fulfilled in your life. Meditate on those things that cause you concern or are making your life seem more difficult than it needs to be. I personally use these 2 sites for myself every couple of months.

Quiz for your 7 basic chakras

Quiz for a more in depth 13 chakras

Tracking your results over time has been a very telling experience for me. While I don’t actually focus specifically on my chakras, the quizzes show me what I am lacking and help me to focus on those things in my life. My own results have actually been quite positive over the course of the last 2 years!
