While most stones come in a variety of colors, peridot presents exclusively in hues of green, ranging from yellowish to lime to brown with bright olive being the most coveted.

The gem peridot is found primarily among rocks that were created by volcanoes and buried deep underground, so wherever there are or were volcanoes, this mineral is likely to be found. It is primarily mined in Brazil, Kenya, Germany, Mexico, Australia, and the Hawaiian islands buts is also found in Arizona, Myanmar, China, and Pakistan. It has also been found on meteorites. In 2006, peridot was found in comet dust brought back from the robotic space prove Stardust.

Early Egyptian priests drank a special beverage called Soma from peridot cups, believing this draws them closer to the goddess of nature, Isis. Historians believe that some of Cleopatra’s coveted emeralds were actually Peridot and likely her favorite gemstone by how many she had.
